The Department of Infectious, Tropical Diseases and Medical Parasitology was established in 1945, with the founding of Chisinau State Institute of Medicine. T. Ciorba Infectious Diseases Clinical Hospital is the Department’s clinical base.

The founder and the first head of the Department (1945-1955) was Liubovi Rozenier, doctor of medical sciences, university professor, Scientist Emeritus. During that period, the Department's staff developed thematic cycles of lectures, methodical instructions for practical classes and various teaching materials, the main scientific topic being "Clinical and Laboratory Study of Infections in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Moldova."

From 1956 to 1982, the chair was headed by Isaak Drobinskii, Habilitated Doctor of medical science, university professor with a strong research interest in viral hepatitis, who at the same time addressed certain aspects of rickettsioses and childhood infections.

Initially, the infectious pathology was studied only at the Faculty of General Medicine. Subsequently, after the opening of other faculties, the respective discipline was included in the study programs of Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine and Dentistry faculties.

Under the leadership of Professor Isaak Drobinskii, the staff of the Department continued to develop teaching materials, improved the quality of the existing ones, meant for teaching infectious pathologies at other faculties. Moreover, staff members actively participated in scientific research, most of them defending doctoral theses in medical sciences.

Between 1984-2007, the position of head of department was held by Constantin Andriuţă, Habilitated Doctor of medical science, university professor, Scientist Emeritus of the Republic of Moldova. During that period, the department studied Clinical and Laboratory Features of Acute, Chronic and Mixed Viral Hepatitis B, C and D.

Since 2007, the Department has been led by Tiberiu Holban, Habilitated Doctor in medical science.

Currently, the main topic of scientific research is Viral Hepatitis B, C, and D Associated with Other Infections (toxoplasmosis, HIV / AIDS, erysipelas, etc.), Aspects of Diagnosis and Treatment. The instructive-didactic activity is carried out according to the concept of continuous training, based on the analytical programs and curricula developed by the teaching staff of the Department.
